How often do you chameleonize yourself?

Ever acted one way with one person and another way with another? Have you ever wondered why that’s the case? And no matter how genuine you think you are, you find yourself acting differently when you talk to your boss as opposed to when you talk to the server at McDonalds.

How about that most prevalent question in many an interview, “Tell us a little about yourself.” This question, in my opinion tends to be the set up for people to create whatever composite they think will be most appealing to those who might be in charge of determining their fate.

Every one of these moments that leads us to act a certain way one moment and another the next are all the different roles that we play in order to seamlessly transition from one expectation to another. These are our chameleon like capabilities. Human beings have the chameleon like unique ability to morph from one role to the next.  It’s not a mystery at all however, how we are able to chameleonize  yes I made it up, ourselves. It just happens that our brains are capable of directing our thoughts and emotions and is ultimately responsible for the personalities we have.  Amazingly, the brain only takes up 2 percent of our body but has the powerful ability to create the constructs for the different roles we play in our lives.

This is why we change our roles in given situations.  It is not being disingenuous. It is actually, the survival mode that your brain gets into to help you get through any particular situation that is going on. The great thing about this information is that if you don’t like how you act in a given situation you have the chance to change and essentially reprogram your mind to help you improve your personality. The real you, is there but with the chance to improve or discard what does not work for you. Kind of like a car that can be souped up with every opportunity you might have.

The key thing is to remember is  that the core of who you are remains constant but the opportunity to chameleonize yourself  is always going to be there. It is only when you first recognize  and grasp your mind’s capability to influence your personality can you get the chance to reprogram and essentially rewire your mind to either improve or create a personality overhaul.

What is even more amazing is that science is continuing to find that the brain is an evolving organ. It is capable of growing neurons depending on activity it is exposed to at any stage of life. In other words, you can condition your mind to be sharper at whatever age and point in your life!

Information you expose to determines how active your brain is. I have found that exposing myself to literature that challenges fixed paradigms that I may have had and never thought to question.  Through reading and exposure to different avenues of information, I have revisited some of my belief systems and either affirmed or discarded a lot of assumptions I previously held but never really substantiated.

Take the chance to chameleonize yourself by exposing your brain to information that can grow your mind in new ways. As you transition through the different roles in your life, create opportunities to improve your personality and examine your paradigms.

No truer words have ever been written. Thank you for sharing your inspiration.

    1. Thank you for your comment. The great thing about the human brain is that unlike a computer it will never run out of bandwidth space. I am glad you enjoyed the article.
